Hovioikeuksien toimintaa on nopeutettava

Toinen Liberaalipuolueen hallituksen jäsen toi esiin miesten kokeman väkivallan parisuhteissa. Satun olemaan vastaavan tapauksen uhri. Tapasin naisen, jonka luulin pitkään olevan maailman ihanin ihminen. Njooh, minulla on nykyään lovi hampaassa hänen jäljiltään. Kuten Hakki omassa kirjoituksessaan http://harrikreus.puheenvuoro.uusisuomi.fi/257996-on-aika-nousta-timetostandup sanoo, asiat tulevat vähitellen.

Suomessa oikeuslaitos on tolkuttoman hidas.

Liberal Party on the Rise in Finland

The 2017 municipal elections in Finland were some weeks ago. I did not get enough votes to become a council member. The classically liberal Liberal Party did, however, gain their first ever council member in the city of Espoo. A feature of the Liberals election campaigns around the country was giving free whiskey shots to adults who stopped to talk with candidates. This is a bit of a grey area in Finnish legislation. At the end of the campaign, the Spokesman of the party was fined for serving alcohol at an event. An appeal has been prepared and a local court in Helsinki will rule on it at some point.

It appears that a portion of the population have become fed up with the nanny state that is Finland. The fresh classically liberal Liberal Party continues to gain members and supporters as a result of this. This may get very interesting indeed if classically liberal fractions from other parties decide to defect to the Liberal Party.

Running for Office

There will be elections for seats on municipal councils in Finland in early April. I’m running for a seat in Tampere as member of the Liberal Party. Note that liberal in continental Europe still means classical liberal.

August

The past couple of summers had a significant element of helping out with construction work. This summer has had none of that. Not even my vehicles received any particular attention this summer.

Something sort of related did happen this summer. My old sofa was all sorts of horrible. That’s why it was replaced with an inexpensive item from IKEA. The cost is offset by the effort needed in assembly. It’s not difficult, but it requires time.

Slow Death of 32-bit Linux

The Linux community quickly adopted 64-bit about a decade ago. Except for some conservatives, new systems started to be deployed nearly exclusively 64-bit. As time went by, 32-bit systems were slowly replaced by 64-bit systems. Still, both variants remained well supported for quite some time. The decline was slow, but in 2015 32-bit Linux seemed to turn into a second class citizen. Some community based distributions were no longer able to find maintainers for 32-bit variants. A shift has also occurred in some commercial software. E.g. Google has now stopped supporting the Chrome browser on 32-bit Linux. Let’s make 2016 the year of migrating from 32-bit to 64-bit Linux. That way developers and package maintainers can forget about one architecture. Linux on ARM could use the freed up resources.

Autumnal Ponderings

I started my own consulting business some time ago. Well, it’s been fun doing things for a living again. I’ve found that the most difficult part of running a business is advertising. Technical skills mean nothing when potential clients do not even know one exists.

Oh, It’s May Already

Nothing major has happened during the past few months. A rather persistent flu has been bugging me. I’ve nearly recovered now. My unfortunate court battle continues with an appeals court, where the other party is trying to have their sentence reduced.

I’ve been using IPv6 on individual servers for a while now. Recently, I’ve started learning how to configure IPv6 networks. It’s a lot like IPv4, but with a much larger address space.

The release of Debian 8.0 was signinificant in a way. Many of the packages in Debian 7 were old enough already to be problematic for developing and deploying services. The switch to systemd in Debian 8 went really smoothly. It’s nice to now have the same tools for handling services on servers as have been on desktops for quite a while already.

December 2014

Events have occurred. The person who had been harassing me was finally sentenced. The sentence was strict given that the person did not have a previous history. In less serious matters, my armada of virtual private servers has grown with the addition of North America. I have another blog on the technical details of my virtual private servers.

Another VPS

Digital Ocean have some very reasonably priced virtual private servers. I’ve been trying one for a day now, and I quite like it. It’s fast and easy to admin. There are now two places where I can run my various services – Finland and UK. This VPS from Digital Ocean has the benefit that it allows commercial use.

CUPS Printers on Ubuntu

You can teach an old sysadmin new tricks. I had been wondering why CUPS network printers did not turn up on Ubuntu systems. Well, quite a bit of googling pointed me in the right direction. The key was noticing that the default install did not include certain Avahi programmes. So, one quick “sudo apt-get install avahi-utils” later, I was happily printing to a printer shared on an openSUSE server.
