Liberal Party on the Rise in Finland

The 2017 municipal elections in Finland were some weeks ago. I did not get enough votes to become a council member. The classically liberal Liberal Party did, however, gain their first ever council member in the city of Espoo. A feature of the Liberals election campaigns around the country was giving free whiskey shots to adults who stopped to talk with candidates. This is a bit of a grey area in Finnish legislation. At the end of the campaign, the Spokesman of the party was fined for serving alcohol at an event. An appeal has been prepared and a local court in Helsinki will rule on it at some point.

It appears that a portion of the population have become fed up with the nanny state that is Finland. The fresh classically liberal Liberal Party continues to gain members and supporters as a result of this. This may get very interesting indeed if classically liberal fractions from other parties decide to defect to the Liberal Party.
